Gym Instructor's Course

Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) Level 2

This 6-day course has been tailored to the requirements of the soft tissue therapist. The basic qualification is designed to enable students to work as Fitness Instructors in a gym environment, but for our students it will also serve as a useful complement to the skills and knowledge gained as soft tissue therapists.

The teaching will aim to enhance both the remedial and rehabilitation side of your practice by demonstrating progressing/regressing exercises and utilising the orthopaedic tests learnt during your sports massage courses to assess clients prior to embarking on a rehab programme or returning to exercise. For therapists who don't have an exercise background, the basic course alone will increase their knowledge and understanding of exercise prescription.

Our Principal Tutor, Adrian Edwards, has taught this course for a number of years to various different students from school sixth formers to sports coaches, but at OSSM he will tailor the teaching to meet the needs of sports massage practitioners.

The 6 days of teaching will be split over 3 consecutive weekends, the last day of which will involve the final assessments. Between teaching weekends students will need to spend a minimum of 4-5 hours a week practicing exercises, gaining a general overview of the principles of exercise, and planning their final gym sessions.

The basic course covers:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Supporting clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Principles of exercise fitness and health
  • Planning exercise
  • Instructing exercise

The A&P component of the course has already been covered by those with a Level 4 or 5 BTEC Diploma in Sports & Remedial Massage so, although it will be assessed at the end of the course, basic A&P will not be covered in the teaching.

  • The theory exam is made up of two multiple choice papers: Anatomy & Physiology and The Principles of Exercise & Fitness
  • The practical exam is in two parts: a short, formative assessment on the Sunday of WE2; and a final, one hour, summative assessment on the Sunday of WE3 when the student will take a client for a full training session
