Sports Massage Diploma

The Oxford School of Sports Massage delivers the BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Clinical Sport and Remedial Massage.  This course meets the learning outcomes of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) D521 and D522, as set out by Skills Active.  We provide students with the skills necessary to work as autonomous practitioners.

On completion of this sports massage course students will be able to apply for full membership of both the Sports Massage Association and the Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage.

Sports massage is the scientific manipulation of soft tissue for injury prevention and therapeutic purposes involving the restoration to normal functional activity of the various structures of the body. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activities and to maintain it in optimal condition.  Massage can be used in the conditioning and training phases of sport: pre-, inter- and post-competition, and post travel.

This sports massage course teaches all the essential skills necessary to become competent at treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal problems ranging from common postural dysfunction to sports injuries - these include general massage techniques, soft tissue release, muscle energy technique and neuromuscular techniques.  Level 5 provides the student with a greater understanding of the underpinning knowledge necessary to apply these techniques to the patient correctly.  As part of the course students will cover postural assessment and joint assessments - both vital components in drawing up treatment plans.

OSSM understands the need for properly trained practitioners and our high quality sports massage diploma reflects this need.

We are accredited by the Sports Massage Association and the ISRM as a training provider.  Our course is externally validated by BTEC through the ISRM and graduating students will be awarded the BTEC Professional Diploma in Clinical Sport and Remedial Massage Therapy.

At OSSM we pride ourselves on offering a good tutor to student ratio with a maximum of 4 students per tutor during all practical sessions, which allows more time to be spent with each student in developing the hand skills necessary to become a competent practitioner.  As a small training company, the more personalised service that OSSM offers allows for greater flexibility, enabling students to move between sports massage courses should this become necessary.  This has proved particularly popular with military students who have found themselves unexpectedly deployed mid-course.

Students will need to obtain a First Aid Certificate prior to the completion of the course, or before doing event work.

The dates over which each course is run are shown below and a copy of our prospectus and an application form can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.  Teaching times are 10 am - 5 pm Saturday and Sunday.
